Curtain Rings Need Cleaning, Too

My kids share a room, and for Christmas we told them they could redecorate it in a Spiderman theme. Goodness — they were excited. But what comes with redecorating? A full deep clean! Ugh. I had to start somewhere, though, and it dawned on me, when have I ever cleaned the curtain rings?

(The answer is quite obviously, never).

The rest is history! As I put up new curtains on my heavy-duty TWOPAGES curtain rings, I felt so accomplished to see those little clips sparkling on the curtain rod. Here’s how you can do it too!

Why Clean Your Curtain and Shower Curtain Rings?

  • To Get Rid of Dust and Grime: Dust, dirt, and even mold can build up on curtain rings, making them look dingy.
  • To Keep Things Moving Smoothly: Clean rings slide easily on the rod, making it easier to open and close your curtains or shower curtain.
  • To Make Your Room Look Nicer: Clean rings make everything look more put together with just a little effort.

What You'll Need:

  • Warm water
  • A HeySunday dishwasher detergent sheet
  • A bowl or sink
  • A soft cloth or sponge
  • An old toothbrush or cotton swabs (for getting into small spaces)
  • White vinegar (optional, for extra cleaning or mold)

Cleaning Curtain Rings (Metal or Plastic):

  1. Take Them Down: Carefully remove the rings from the curtain rod.
  2. Soak in Soapy Water: Fill a bowl or sink with warm water and a HeySunday dishwasher detergent sheet. Put the rings in the water and let them soak for about 15-20 minutes. This helps loosen the dirt.
  3. Scrub Gently: Use a soft cloth or sponge to gently scrub each ring. For any stubborn dirt or grime, use an old toothbrush or cotton swab to get into the cracks.
  4. Rinse Thoroughly: Rinse each ring really well under running water to remove all the soap.
  5. Dry Completely: Lay the rings out on a clean towel to dry completely before putting them back on the rod. This prevents rust (on metal rings) and mold.

Cleaning Shower Curtain Rings (Often Plastic):

  1. Take Them Down: Remove the rings from the shower curtain rod.
  2. Soak in Soapy Water: Just like with curtain rings, soak the shower curtain rings in warm, soapy HeySunday detergent water for 15-20 minutes.
  3. Vinegar Power (Optional but Recommended): If you see any signs of mold or mildew, add about a cup of white vinegar to the soaking water. Vinegar is a natural cleaner and helps kill mold.
  4. Scrub Gently: Use a soft cloth or sponge to scrub each ring. Pay extra attention to any areas with mold or mildew. Use an old toothbrush or cotton swab to get into any tight spots.
  5. Rinse Thoroughly: Rinse the rings very well under running water.
  6. Dry Completely: Make sure the rings are completely dry before putting them back on the shower curtain rod.

Tips and Tricks for All Rings:

  • Clean Regularly: Try to clean your curtain and shower curtain rings every few months, or more often if you notice they are getting dirty.
  • Prevent Mold in the Shower: To help prevent mold on your shower curtain rings, make sure your bathroom is well-ventilated and that the shower curtain can dry completely after each use.
  • Check for Damage: While you’re cleaning, check the rings for any cracks or breaks. If you find any, it’s probably time to replace them.

A Small Effort, Big Satisfaction

I know my kids don’t care at ALL about those clean curtain rings, but I do! I smile when I walk in their room — even though toys and books are everywhere. We have to find the little joys though, right?
