Author: Kate Amore, an alpine ski coach in Lake Tahoe

Hey there! I am an alpine ski coach in Lake Tahoe, California and want to share my tips on washing winter gloves. Washing them doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s how I routinely clean my winter gloves.

Why You Should Wash Your Gloves

Winter gloves are essential for keeping your hands warm, but they can get super gross and smelly, especially if you wear them while being active in the winter.

As a ski coach, I constantly wash my gloves because I wear them all day, everyday, and I want to protect myself from picking up any winter sicknesses from the kids! Plus, putting on a pair of freshly cleaned gloves makes them feel brand new!

Check the Care Label

Before you start, always check the care label on your gloves. Different materials have different washing requirements:

  • Leather: Usually needs special care.
  • Wool: Often requires hand washing to avoid shrinking.
  • Synthetic fabrics: Typically machine washable, but check for specifics.

How Do You Wash Gloves?

Hand Washing

  1. Prepare Water: Fill a basin with lukewarm water and half a HeySunday laundry sheet.
  2. Soak the Gloves: Submerge your gloves and let them soak for a few minutes.
  3. Gently Clean: Use your fingers to gently rub any dirty spots.
  4. Rinse: Rinse under cool running water until the soap is gone.
  5. Dry: Lay flat on a towel to dry. Avoid hanging them to prevent stretching.

Machine Washing

  1. Use a Laundry Bag: I always put my gloves in a mesh laundry bag for protection.
  2. Set the Machine: Use a gentle cycle with cold water.
  3. Mild Detergent: I use half a HeySunday sheet.
  4. Drying: Air dry by laying them flat, away from direct sunlight or heat.

Extra Tips

  • Avoid Fabric Softeners: They can damage the materials.
  • Store Properly: Keep your gloves in a cool, dry place, laid flat or hung up.
  • Spot Clean: If they get dirty between washes, spot clean as needed.

Conclusion

Washing my winter gloves is part of my biweekly routine now. Keeps them fresh and in good condition, and helps protect against winter illnesses!

By following these tips, you can ensure your gloves stay clean and ready for all your winter activities. Enjoy the season!
