Growing up in Alaska, low temperatures dip down into the 30s as early as September – so warm outdoor gear is a must.

I have memories of my mom bundling me up in a faux fur coat for elementary school and playground adventures, and my family has been wearing (and cleaning) faux fur ever since.

While these cozy synthetic pieces are perfect for staying warm in winter, they require special care - whether you're a kid running around in a faux fur-lined jacket or a mom whose faux fur throw blanket has become the family's favorite couch companion.

After years of wearing and cleaning faux fur, I've learned the best ways to keep these pieces looking plush and feeling soft without damaging them.

How do you wash faux fur without ruining it?

While many people think faux fur needs to be dry cleaned, it's actually possible (and so much easier!) to wash clean faux fur at home.

We knew we needed a gentle cleaner that was tough on stains and dirt, and that’s how we found HeySunday laundry sheets. Let me take you through the steps to get started washing your faux fur coats at home:

Step 1: Gather Your Faux Fur Clothing

I wash my faux fur mittens, hat, and vest the most. The mittens and hat need deep cleaning every 2-3 weeks because they collect debris from the outdoors, as well as sweat and dead skin from sitting directly on my skin.

Step 2: Place in the Washer with 1 Laundry Sheet

I only use 1 laundry sheet to ensure the fur is being washed as delicately as possible. Too much soap may damage the texture of the faux fur.

Step 3: Wash Faux Fur on COLD

Wash your faux fur on cold to keep the integrity of the texture as well as the coloring.

Step 4: Hang Dry

DO NOT put fur into the dryer. This is the mistake most people make while cleaning faux fur. The heat and tumble of the dryer will damage the texture and cause shrinking. Instead, hang dry faux fur items.

I am so happy HeySunday works so well on faux fur because I can rest easy knowing I can protect myself and my family from outside germs and bacteria during the winter months. It makes the color more vibrant, the texture softer, and we feel so cozy in our furs!

Conclusion

Remember, washing faux fur at home doesn't have to be complicated - just stick to cold water, one HeySunday laundry sheet, and always hang dry.

Following these simple washing instructions keeps our faux fur looking beautiful and feeling soft. Whether you're playing in the snow or cuddling up on the couch, it always feels better to cozy up with properly cared-for faux fur.

Just remember: keep it cold, keep it gentle, and never (ever!) put it in the dryer.
